No matter what you want to achieve in life, the only way to success is taking action. I used to be terrified of speaking in public and even uncomfortable in some social settings. I will share my experience in overcoming my fears and gaining confidence. I joined an organization and wanted to be more involved. The next year, I volunteered to serve on the Board. This position required me to speak in front of the group at every meeting each month. I was nervous, but I did it anyway. For a while, everyone could tell I was nervous, but the group was supportive. Then one day, I wasn’t nervous anymore. I took action, doing what I was afraid to do over and over until I believed in myself. Then my confidence started showing. I eventually became the President of that organization. Doing this helped me gain confidence in all areas of my life. I now know I can overcome any fear or challenge by with confidence.
We have all failed at something in business, life or both at some point. If you haven’t, you’re not trying hard enough. When we fail, we have to get up and rebuild. The key is that you have to do something to get to where you want to be. If you want to raise your rates, you must have confidence in your value and charge what you are worth from your clients. If you want to be known as an expert in your field, you may have to speak at events in front of your peers. Having confidence will help you with overcoming your fears.
There is no secret method or shortcut. Without action, there is no success. The hard part is not knowing what to do. The hard part is doing it. That is where confidence makes the difference. Don’t let fear stop you from accomplishing what you want in life and your business!
Confidence Leads to Action; Action Leads to Success
Confidence plays a critical factor in your success. When you’re confident, you can face your big fears. Whether it’s something specific like becoming better at public speaking or following your dreams, it is the difference between thinking about doing something and doing it.
All business owners must sell their services to keep the doors open. Customers are more likely to work with someone who is confident, and they will be happy to pay a premium for your service. You have to sell yourself, your services, your value and being confident is crucial. We work one on one with clients who need help with confidence for many reasons in our Ignite Program at 74 Systems. Confidence is not out of your reach. Sometimes you just need a little guidance to find it.
What Does It Mean to Be Confident?
Being confident means, you believe in yourself and that you deserve to succeed and it also is believing in your ability to succeed. Since you love numbers, I have a simple equation:
Thoughts + Skills = Confidence
It is a simple process. First, you must act confident then you will begin to believe you can be confident, then one day you will realize you are confident. It all lies within you. You may just need to find it again. I have noticed in my life that my confidence goes up and down. When I get down, I shake off whatever happened and remind myself that I am AWSOME! There is nothing wrong with saying that about yourself. If you don’t, who will?
The Confident Mindset
A common misconception is that some people are born with the gift of confidence. The truth is everyone is born with unstoppable confidence. It’s a skill anyone can master. Most adults struggle with confidence. For some reason, when we grow up we lose it. At least to some degree. Strangely, I always feel better when I know others are facing the same struggles. What I appreciate about this is that we can help each other. So, if you’re feeling insecure, you are not alone.
The key is that you can’t be afraid of making mistakes or saying the wrong thing. Confident people aren’t right all the time. The difference is, they’re not afraid to make a wrong decision. If you want to be more confident, start by not taking yourself too seriously.
How to be More Confident in 2 Minutes
There are many tools you can use to build confidence. I love the “power pose.” Amy Cuddy shared it on a TED talk “Your body language shapes who you are” shares that standing in “power poses” for two minutes can give you confidence even when you don’t feel confident. Watch this and then try it!
I will be writing another post with great tips to build confidence. Stay tuned!
