Sometimes It Works; Sometimes It Doesn’t…Or Maybe You’re Just Boring!

The pic of your wipeout on the slopes is going to draw a ton of attention on Instagram. Your Tweet, ya, that’s gonna get a ton of RTs! No. No…they…won’t. Or…maybe, maybe they will. If all else fails, post cute pics of your kids. If you don’t have kids or they’re not cute, here, use mine.

We really never know what’s going to work for in social media. Whether its our ego or our narcissism acting up, there are so many factors that rile people up and get them to respond. Time of day. Season. Weather. Topic. You.

At schoolofbookkeeping.com, we get more visits to our website from people searching for “excel templates” than any other search term. Excel templates???? Really???

I once wrote a post about the Better Business Bureau. Back then, I could care less if anyone read it. I wrote it because I was pissed off and had to get it off my chest. It was my most popular post of all time.

I’ve put some pretty brilliant stuff up there, or so I thought, that FLOPPED, big time! I’ve even reposted it because I was sure it was hilarious, useful, interesting or sexy. Nope, deaf ears.

When writing content, the idea you have at the time and the time you have the idea and the time you have to deliver the idea, all matter, or, they don’t. It’s an art, which means some will like it and some will not. It’s also a science, but that’s not always based on fact either, at least not yet, or until proven differently. It’s life and it’s evolving and changing and shifting. Emotions and moon shifts can matter. Google changing it’s algorithm can make a difference. It’s a total crapshoot, sometimes.

If you’re curious about why I chose to use a pic of me in a tux next to Big Boy as this post’s feature image, the answer is really simple. I thought this pic would get a ton of likes on Facebook. It bombed. Let’s see if it works this time.

All this negativity about content creation aside, there are a few solid principles to follow to ensure the best results. Here’s a list (sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t):

1. Write your content with a passion. Get into it. Enjoy it. Deliver something people need to know and want to read. Give it some color and some life. Remember, your audience is alive too. HAVE FUN!

2. Sometimes when is more important than what. So, repost it. If it still gets crickets, dump or rewrite it. Maybe no one cares. Or maybe you didn’t care writing it (see #1).

3. Don’t dump. If you have to post content, be sure it’s not all you do. You’ve got to get the band fired up to ensure a great performance. Be human, engage, for it is indeed called “social” media.

4. State your opinion and be wrong sometimes. We all have beliefs and opinions. We also have…nevermind. When you write, you may not always be right. Sometimes you are just testing a theory or trying to stimulate a conversation to determine what is in fact right. So ask a question. “Do you know the answer?” See, it’s easy. I’d answer that with “nope, but I know how to Google.” Moral: ENGAGE, create ENGAGEMENT.

5. I have no idea what #4 means. Do you?

6. Write about things that you may not be expert at but want to be. So, maybe you’re a little vulnerable here, but being human is so 2015.

7. Humor. If you can make yourself LOL, you’re probably gonna get a chuckle or two from others.

8. NEVER, EVER MAKE LISTS!

At the end of the day, sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t. Keep on writing, keep on creating, keep on keeping on!
