Words, tone of voice, and body language respectively account for 7%, 38%, and 55% of personal communication. It’s simply the most effective way to communicate, build a relationship, and build trust. If you think about it… communication with your clients is largely about building trust, and as an accountant or “trusted advisor” this is hands down the most valuable asset to your practice.

OK. You’re going to start using video to communicate with your clients. What’s next?

For starters treat your video calls as if you’re meeting in-person, so take care of your personal hygiene and wear a decent outfit. Solid, dark colored clothing works best on camera. That means no shirts with lots of designs or checkered clothing. You’ll also want to pick clothing that compliments your body and hair color best. Next, get good lighting or position your desk near natural sunlight with a calm background. That could be a wall, bookcase, drapes, etc. The goal is to reduce distraction and focus the picture solely on you. Lastly, invest in a $30 HD webcam.
